Steven Wirick

June 5, 1945 — December 28, 2021

Steven Kaye Wirick, beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Great-grandfather passed away peacefully on December 28, 2021 with his loving wife, Judy, of 54 years by his side.

Steve was born June 5, 1945 in Ogden, Utah. He was the son of Edna and Norris Wirick and in the middle of the pack of 7 siblings.

Steve met the love of his life, Judy, in junior high school. The details of their meeting involved high school bleachers and is nothing short of family legend. Steve and Judy were married April 7, 1967, in the Salt Lake City Temple after his mission in the Great Lakes Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He remained a faithful member of the Church throughout his life.

Shortly before their wedding, Steve enlisted in the United States Navy where he served two combat tours in Vietnam aboard the aircraft carrier USS Coral Sea. During his first tour, he was an aircraft electronics guru on the ship repairing radar and radio equipment. His reputation and skill earned him a seat aboard an E-2 Hawkeye radar and communications plane on his second tour, even though he was ship’s company. He never told his wife that he was flying combat missions until he returned home from his tour and Judy notice the wings on his uniform. When questioned about the wings, Steve responded in pure Steve fashion, “Well, I’ve been doing a little flying.” He earned extra money on the ship by repairing radios and tailoring uniforms for other sailors as well as taking extra MP duty while on shore

When he returned from the Navy, he joined the Air Force Reserve where he served until 1991 with the 419 Tactical Fighter Wing performing aircraft maintenance on his favorite aircraft, the F-16 Viper.

Steve earned his Electronic Engineering Degree from Weber State College. He started working at Hill Air Force Base in 1967 and worked for the Air Force as an electronic engineer for 38 years until he retired. His career included avionics, mission planning, and weapons systems on mainly the F-16, but also included the F-117 Nighthawk, cruise missiles, various other guided weapons, and he was in engineering management.

In 1971, Steve and Judy adopted their first child, Jennifer Lee. While finalizing court proceedings, they had the pleasure of telling the judge they were pregnant with their first son, Tyler Steven, who was born in 1972. They were blessed again 6 years later in 1978 with the birth of their third and final child, Brady Matthew.

Steve and Judy made North Ogden their home for the entirety of their married life, with the exception of a 1-year stint in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Steve was known for his fierce devotion to his wife, his love for his kids and grandkids, his love for his dog, Lucee, his goofy (and often naughty) sense of humor, his love of everything outdoors, especially camping and fishing, and his love for Pepsi, and Jeeps.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 11 a.m. at Lindquist’s North Ogden, 2140 North Washington Blvd. Friends may visit with family on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Ben Lomond Cemetery, North Ogden.

In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Hill Airforce Base Flight Museum or your favorite charity.
